    Representative testing of personal protection equipment

    The purpose of the work reported within this thesis was to design and implement a series of tests which better replicate the impact conditions experienced during a game, and allow for quantitative measurements of performance of various items of personal protection equipment (PPE). The sports of cricket and taekwondo were used as case studies. The aim was to improve on existing testing protocols making them more representative of real life, an approach that has not been previously attempted in the literature and so required design of multiple items of novel equipment. A representative cricket impact test was developed utilizing a ball canon firing a cricket ball mass at an equivalent bowling velocity of 31 m/s (70 mph) and a novel, freely suspended force acquisition system with embedded accelerometers from which the transmitted force values could be derived. Throughout the testing secondary variables of coefficient of restitution (COR), deformation and contact time were measured from high speed video footage to give further insight into the impact mechanics of the three tested leg guards. Contact times were in the range of 3 ms - 4 ms, COR between 0.38 - 0.50 and deformation between 45 mm - 52 mm. These results were compared against other benchmark tests to establish how close the representative test was to an actual human related ball-pad impact and to estimate human tolerance levels to impact. A rig to mimic a human on human kicking impact in taekwondo was designed to measure performance of the piece of body protection equipment used in training and competition, commonly referred to as a hogu. Primarily a mechanical simulator was designed to replicate the speed and mass of a human leg impacting during a roundhouse kick. A force acquisition system was manufactured, capable of integrating with the kicking robot functioning, with a human torso sized and shaped anvil, using a similar accelerometer based system of force measurement as that introduced in the cricket testing. This test was then used to measure performance levels of nine off-the-shelf hogus and protective training pads. Using transmitted peak force and time to peak force (TTPF) as indicators of protection, these values were found to range from between 0.5 kN 7.5 kN and 9 ms - 23 ms across the pads indicating a major difference in the protection provided

    Evaluation of the InDUCKtion project at UCL

    Executive summary: There is evidence that a good induction to university life can help with student retention; however, there is also a danger of overwhelming students during the intense period of fresher’s week. Under the auspices of a small grant from the Higher Education Academy’s ‘Changing the Learning Landscape’ funding stream, staff at two universities (University College London and Southampton Solent University) collaborated to produce an innovative and engaging induction project entitled ‘InDUCKtion’, based on the idea of an induction duck being a fun character for students to interact with. At UCL, the InDUCKtion duck existed in the form of a physical plastic duck included in international postgraduate student induction packs, and they were encouraged to take photos of themselves in and around UCL and London as part of a photo challenge using social media. It was anticipated that this would enable students to familiarise themselves with the locale, make friends and have fun at the same time. The InDUCKtion duck was also evident on flyers and posters with QR codes advertising an online tour to enable students to gain an accelerated familiarisation with the campus and its facilities. Within UCL, the project was a collaborative, cross-departmental venture instigated by members of UCL’s E-Learning Environments (ELE) working in partnership with the Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching (CALT) and Student Support and Wellbeing (SSW). The logistics of the project meant that the team members also had to liaise with a number of other individuals and departments around UCL, to help promote and implement the project. Despite a rapid following on Twitter in a relatively short period, a reasonable hit rate on the QR code for the main page of the online tour resource, and some engagement with the photo challenges using social media, participation in the project was lower than anticipated. Lessons learned from an evaluation perspective revealed that adding another activity to an already overwhelming fresher’s week was problematic, despite its innovative and interactive nature. The use of QR codes was problematic for a number of reasons, and the project needed more buy-in from student representatives and academics to provide institutional endorsement. Recommendations for future instances of the project include securing student representation and academic endorsement, integrating the activity with parallel induction activities – particularly with academic departments, replacing QR codes with an alternative technology-enhanced learning approach and optimising the learning design to better motivate students and promote groupwork

    Relationships of Soil Acidity and Air Temperature to the Wind and Vegetation at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska

    Investigations in the Prudhoe Bay vicinity suggest that prevailing winds from the east combined with the shape of the coastline and a source of calcareous materials in the Sagavanirktok River delta cause distinct patterns of soil reaction and temperature. Areas downwind from the river have basic soil pH values ranging from 7.1 to 8.4, whereas wet tundra sites outside the path of loess-laden winds have acidic values ranging from 5.3 to 7.0. The winds also affect the local climate by blowing moist cold air and fog further inland in the western part of the Prudhoe Bay oil field. Air temperatures are correlated with distance to the ocean measured in the direction of the prevailing wind vector. The temperature differences also influence the depth of the active layer. The differences in pH and temperatures affect the vegetation of the region. The areas with basic soils show relative abundance of calciphiles, whereas areas with lower pH values have acidophilous plants. Lower temperatures near the coast affect the distribution of many taxa as well as the phenology and stature of the vegetation

    RUNNING SHOE STIFFNESS:THE EFFECT ON WALKING GAIT

    Sports shoes can be grouped into various categories based on their stability, protection capabilities, traction, impact characteristics and stiffness. The majority of shoe tests involve measures of traction and impact. Few studies have examined shoe sole stiffness. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess shoe sole stiffness by a materials testing procedure, and then examine the effect of shoe stiffness on walking gait. A damped oscillation technique, previously used on muscle-tendon complexes, was utilised to calculate the stiffness and the damping factor of six types of running shoes. The shoes used different rnidsole components which included air sacs, gel sacs, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and kevlar reinforcing. Two shoes at the extremes of the range were then selected from the materials test results for use in the subsequent gait analysis. Nine males ranging in age from 25 to 45 years (mean =36 years) participated in the experiment. Heights ranged from 186cm to 176cm (mean=182cm) and weights ranged from 72.5kg to 89kg (mean=8lkg). No subjects had any musculoskeletal problems affecting the lower limb. Two dimensional video data were collected on the right leg using an Ariel Video Analysis system sampling at 50 Hz, as subjects walked at 5.1 km/hr on a motor driven treadmill. Markers were placed on the greater trochanter, lateral condyle of the femur, lateral malleolus of the fibular, the heel of the shoe and on the shoe at the level of the fifth metatarsal head. Three stride cycles were collected after the subjects had walked on the treadmill for one minute. Data were digitised and downloaded to FMAP software to calculate kinematic variables such as knee and ankle angle and knee and ankle angular velocity. Data were then normalised to 50 points and averaged across stride cycles and subjects. Although a comparison of the stiff and flexible shoes indicated no differences in the kinematic parameters (p>0.05), it may be that the muscles of the lower limb adjust their activity level for the stiffness of the shoe to maintain an invariant kinematic pattern

    Effects of Crude and Diesel Oil Spills on Plant Communities at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and the Derivation of Oil Spill Sensitivity Maps

    Crude oil was spilled on six of the major Prudhoe Bay plant communities at an intensity of 12 l/m². The communities occurred along a topographic-moisture gradient. The reaction of the major species of the various communities was recorded one year following the spills. Sedges and willows showed substantial recovery from crude oil spills. Mosses, lichens, and most dicotyledons showed little or no recovery. On a very wet plot with standing water, the vegetation showed total recovery one year following the spill. Dry plots, on the other hand, showed very poor recovery. Dryas integrifolia M. Vahl, the most important vascular species on dry sites, was killed. Identical experiments using diesel oil rather than crude oil showed all species except an aquatic moss to be killed. A sensitivity index for the communities was calculated on the basis of the percentage cover of the resistant species divided by the original total plant cover of the community. With this information an oil spill sensitivity map for an area of Prudhoe Bay was constructed using a vegetation map as a base. Using the crude oil data from Prudhoe Bay together with some from the literature, a predictive sensitivity map was also constructed for an accidental crude oil spill at nearby Franklin Bluffs. In this example all the community types are considered to have moderate to excellent recovery potential. Implications of the experiments and the mapping exercises for oil spill contingency planning are discussed

    Estimated workload intensity during volunteer aquarium dives

    Background: This study aimed to characterize the physiological demands of working dives on volunteer divers at a public aquarium in the USA. Aims: To estimate the workloads associated with volunteer dives in a US aquarium. Methods: Participants completed a medical and diving history questionnaire. Measurements included blood pressure before and after diving and continuous ECG (Holter) monitoring during diving. Dive profiles were recorded using loggers. Mean workload was estimated from total air consumption. Results Twenty-seven divers recorded 49 air dives over 5 days. Two-thirds were male and ages ranged from 40 to 78 years. Typically, each diver made two dives with a 30-60 min surface interval. Mean heart rate while diving was 100 beats per minute (bpm). Mean estimated workload during the dives recorded during this study was 5.8 metabolic equivalents (METS), with a range from 4.1 to 10.5. The highest mean recorded heart rate was 120 bpm over 40 min, vacuuming the floor in the shark exhibit. Conclusions: Given the mean age of this sample and the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (body mass index, high cholesterol and hypertension), it may be prudent for aquariums to regularly monitor SAC/kg and heart rate in volunteer divers, to identify which tasks require the highest workload intensity. Divers with existing cardiovascular risk factors might then be employed in dives with lighter workloads. In conclusion, volunteer dives at this aquarium required a mean workload intensity that was described by recreational divers as moderate. The highest workload, at 10 METS for 23 min, would be considered by many recreational divers as exhausting
